Learning From Japan Forming Educated Community

Small lots, which I wrote when I lived in Japan. Been loaded in the Opinion column, newspaper Republika, July 15, 2002.

Not a day without reading the newspapers overlooked Indonesia over the Internet. Here and there appeared news about the moral destruction of society and bawdy personality marutnya Indonesia, as a nation are not educated. And the damage is significant and thorough Indonesia hit many segments of society, from top officials, medium to low, from parliamentarians to spread to the general public. Then if we listen to international news, has become a common thing, that Indonesia has always won international contests related to the vices. From the large number of problems of corruption, violation of human rights, software piracy, to the low issue of human resources (HR).

In this paper, the author tries to describe how an educated community (community knowledged) and civilized it may actually be formed from something very simple.

From observing the behavior of the Japanese public life, actually illustrated how an educated community born of a simple nature and attitude. The first lets see how the Japanese put forward a sense of "shame". The phenomenon of "shame" that has been ingrained in the attitudes of Japanese society and culture proved to be very broad implications in many areas of life. Authors look at that in Japan there are lots of other good things are formed from this embarrassment attitudes, including respect for human rights issues, issues of law enforcement officers issue of moral hygiene, etc..

How Japanese people behave toward traffic rules is an obvious example. Japanese people prefer to choose to use a detour rather than interfere with the driver behind the cut line in the middle of the highway. How Meekly them to wait for traffic lights to green light, although the road was no longer a passing vehicle. How do they automatically form a queue directly in any situations that need, purchase a train ticket, entrance to the stadium to watch football, at the bus stop, even to use public toilets at stations, they are neatly lined up waiting their turn. They are ashamed of their environment when they break rules or norms that have become common agreement.

The next interesting thing is how Japanese people are very principled "economic" problem shopping in the household. Excessive anti-consumerism attitude is seen in many areas of life. About 8 years ago, the early start of life in Japan, I was amazed with the number of Japanese people crowded the supermarket at about 19:30. Quizzed had inquired, it has become commonplace that the supermarkets in Japan will cut prices up to half in about half an hour before closing. As it is known that Japan's Supermarket in the average closed at 20:00. Another example is the housewives who are willing to ride a bike to the grocery store a little way from home, just because it is cheaper 10 or 20 yen. Also how the Japanese prefer to ride Densha (electric trains) Densha private rather than public property, due to Tokyo and the surrounding area turned out to be cheaper than private Densha-owned land. And many more examples of the most amazing and prove that the Japanese were very economical.

In their economy is not a poor nation because virtually now have a very high GDP ranking in the world. They are also not a nation that is not busy or have time berhidup more economical, because they worked very diligently with the nation's well-known even a workaholic (workaholic). But great they retain the principle of economic life. This is contrary to society of developing countries (read: Indonesia) which is highly consumptive. Frankly we are very lazy to be economical. Can be little new money was getting ready to go to Singapore for shopping, or buy a new mobile phone.

imigrasi.jpgSifat next is a matter of "courtesy and respect for others". Japanese society is very well-trained reflexes to say gomennasai (sorry) in any condition that does not reassure anyone else. If we walk in a hurry and hit the Japanese people, before we could say sorry, Japanese people will quickly say sorry to us. Likewise, if we collide with their bikes. No matter who is actually on the wrong side, they will reflexively say gomennasai (sorry).

If moral and simple properties of the Japanese people, such as embarrassment, economic life, respect for others has been very far beyond us, coupled with the rapid advancement of economy and living systems. Now let us ask ourselves, what is good what about we can be proud as a nation of Indonesia to them?

Indonesian nation not a nation of fools and do not understand morals. We can see that the Indonesian students who are studying Japanese, German, American and in other countries, many high achievers and not least in science and cleverness. Likewise, if we compare how the observers and commentators on television Indonesia Indonesia menguraiakan analysis. During 8 years of living in Japan the author has never found the analysis of observer and commentator on Japanese television a more powerful analysis than an observer and commentator Indonesia. And this is a thorough, from economic, political, governmental systems and even a football problem.

But it is unfortunate that the facts show, politically, and our system of government is more stable than Japan, our economy is far below Japan. In the matter of football is also in a short time the Japanese had penetrated 16 of the achievers in this world cup in 2002, while we ourselves are still spinning with no quality problems, the problem of the referee, the player until kisruhnya supporters.

Taking lessons from the cases described above author. Apparently the cleverness and ingenuity of our brains is not enough to bring us into a community of educated. It is precisely the attitude and principles of real life that's simple look will be silmultan form a nation becomes great and civilized nation.
